Doctrine - Audacity To Homeschool

This decision will cost you something. It will cost you time, money, comparison, and sometimes the approval of people you love. Scripture doesn't tell you to build without first sitting down and counting the cost. It tells you to count it before you lay the first stone, not after the walls are half up and the money's gone. Families who count the cost going in build with resolve. Families who don't tend to quit by year three, wondering what happened.

I. The Family Is the First Institution

Before the church. Before the school. Before the state. The family is the first and most important institution of education. God designed it that way. Every other structure is downstream of it.

II. Conviction Before Curriculum

Choose a curriculum before you have a governing philosophy only leads to uncertainty. The curriculum is a tool. The philosophy is the blueprint. Building without a blueprint produces chaos, not education.

III. The Parent Is Always the Leader

You are not a facilitator. You are not a classroom manager. You are the parent-leader of your family's education. Leadership is not a personality type. It is a responsibility. It can be developed.

IV. Conformity Is Not a Strategy

Copying what works for another family is not humility. It is abdication. Your family has a unique make up, calling, and season. What flourished for them may be precisely wrong for you.

V. The Home Is Not a School

The home has a different purpose, a different structure, and a different authority than the school. When you bring the public school's system into your home, you undermine both. The home must be built as a place where learning is a regular part of life.

VI. Foundation Work Cannot Be Skipped

There are no shortcuts in architecture. You cannot build the second floor before the first. You cannot build the first floor before the foundation. Families who skip foundation work spend years repairing what they should have built correctly from the start.

VII. Discernment Is a Discipline

The ability to evaluate information, resist trends, and make decisions from conviction rather than anxiety is not a gift. It is a discipline. It must be practiced. It must be taught.
